Software Engineer
Location: New Zealand (Auckland preferred) | Employment Type: Full-time
About CONQA:
CONQA is a leading provider of quality assurance software for the construction industry. Our platform empowers construction teams to streamline processes, ensure compliance, and deliver projects with confidence. Join us in transforming the construction landscape through innovative technology.
Founded in 2015, we're a 30 person company where you'll know everyone by name, your work will ship to real user on real job sites, and you won't get lost in layers of process.
The role:
We’re hiring a Software Engineer (intermediate level) to join a small, high-trust engineering team. This is a great opportunity to grow your skills across the entire software lifecycle, from customer feedback to operating in production. You'll work across the stack with your team writing code, running tests, and shipping to production multiple times a day.
Day to day, you'll:
- Build and evolve CONQA's apps and services across front-end and back-end
- Work collaboratively in a team that is shipping to production constantly
- Align approaches through mobbing, pair programming and code review as appropriate
- Write automated tests that give the team the confidence to move fast
- Monitor and operate what you build in production
- User modern LLM-based coding tools (like Claude Code). We invest in these to make engineers more effective, not to replace them.
What you'll bring
On day one:
- Experience building software products as part of a team
- Experience writing automated unit and integration tests
- Comfort working across front-end and back-end and cloud-operations (we'll help you lean into your strengths)
- A genuine desire to learn quickly and iterate on feedback
- A willingness to try things, get it wrong and get better
Ideally you've worked with:
- TypeScript / JavaScript, React
- AWS, Serverless (Lambda, Serverless Framework)
- NoSQL (DynamoDB, CouchDB)
- SQL (Postgres/Aurora Serverless) not needed, but a bonus if you do
- Serverless application development
- Public API design and evolution, not essential, but a bonus
- Automated unit and regression testing
- Production monitoring and DevOps practices
How we work:
We're a high-trust team that cares about doing good work sustainably. That means:
- Ownership over gatekeeping: you're trusted to make decisions and ship
- Collaboration is how we build: pair and ensemble programming are part of the rhythm, not an occasional experiment
- Fast feedback loops: continuous deployment, code review focused on learning and safety
- Curiosity is valued: we hire people who are coachable and hungry to grow
- Modern tooling: including LLM coding assistants, because we want engineers spending their energy on the hard problems
Why CONQA:
- Most Fridays off: our wellbeing policy gifts most Fridays back to you, because we believe great engineering happens when people are rested, not burned out
- Genuine flexibility: one team day in the office per week; beyond that, work in a way that suits you
- Employee Share Option Plan (ESOP): you'll own a piece of what you're building
- A close-knit team: ~35 people across the company, where your name is known and your contributions are visible
We encourage anyone excited by this role to apply, regardless of whether you meet every single requirement. What matters most to us is how you think, how you learn, and what you want to build.
If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
